Merida manages to defy this tradition by competing in the competition herself. Through law, she is the one who will choose the competition the suitors must perform in the Highland Games in order to win the prize that is her hand in marriage. Yet Merida finds herself not having a choice with the matter, and still appears angry and reluctant the day the clans arrive. In fact, in the moment when she is given this news, it is clear that there is a lot of conflict between her and Elinor and hardly any communication between them. Merida is less than thrilled with this news, making it clear that she is independent and does not like or want to be a pampered princess and have her life lived for her. However, because she has come of age, Elinor informs her that she to be betrothed to one of the sons of the lords of DunBroch's neighboring clans MacGuffin, Macintosh, and Dingwall. Years later, a teenage Merida has triplet brothers and has fulfilled her wish of becoming an archer. The family encounters a black demon bear named Mor'du and Fergus fights it off at the cost of his left leg. Merida is given a bow as a present and dreams of becoming a great archer. Set in the Highlands of Scotland, in the kingdom of DunBroch, a young red-haired princess named Merida celebrates her birthday with her father King Fergus and mother Queen Elinor. If Cars 2 hadn't been released prior to it, Brave might have gained more good reception, but I still really enjoyed it because it was so different, especially for a Disney princess fairy tale. The following year, Brave managed to gain positive feedback, though not as much as earlier films had done. In 2011, the twelfth film from Pixar, Cars 2, was regarded as their first bad movie since critical reception was mixed, breaking their streak of all preceding films receiving positive reviews.
