![]() I can’t name all the dynamics I enjoyed, but I particularly loved the sibling-like friendship of eccentric engineers Kizzy and Jenks, and the tentative, sweet romance between human file clerk Rosemary and reptilian pilot Sissix The relationships between the crew members are essential to the story, abundant with heart-warming themes of family and connections. Chambers gives each character time to shine – despite a fairly large cast, no one feels underdeveloped or flat. The plot takes a backseat in a fascinating world, focusing on a character-focused story that explores the crew’s personal lives and relationships with each other. ![]() The n ovel follows a small and rundown spaceship the Wayfarer, and its crew – a cast as loveable as it is colourful, a diverse mix of humans, aliens, and AIs, with well-handled representations of LGBT+ people, people of colour, and disabled people. The ‘doom and gloom’ rhetoric is not necessarily a bad thing – But it can get admittedly dull after a while, which is why Chambers is such a breath of fresh air to the sci-fi landscape. The book’s optimism is a true glowing light in a genre of dark, dramatic stories. It’s a feel-good and worldbuilding-rich space opera novel that delighted me from start to finish. While visiting her hatch family on Hashkath, Sissix is much more open and physically affectionate with her family than she is with the other members of the Wayfarer's crew. She gets along well with most of the crew and enjoys their company, but she and Corbin dislike each other and often argue. She is the one who navigates while in regular space, and she works with Ohan while tunneling to ensure the ship makes it out of the sublayer correctly. ![]() As a child, Sissix loved snapfruit, and sometimes it was all her hatch family was able to get her to eat. She describes herself as a willful child, claiming that this is because she "wasn't a person yet," as Aandrisks do not view young children the same way that other species do. Sissix grew up on Hashkath, the Aandrisk homeworld. She cares that others are treated well, and personally intervenes to ensure this. Sissix is cooperative, friendly, and curious, sometimes to the point that humans find her nosy or overly affectionate. There are thick claws on her fingers and toes, which she paints with gold swirls. She has a flat chest, thin waist, muscular thighs, and bowed legs. Her head is covered in multicolored feathers, comparative to a short mane. Her face is smooth, with no nose, lips, or ears, instead containing holes for breathing and hearing alongside her yellow eyes and mouth. She has moss green scales over most of her body, which fade into lighter scales over her belly. ![]() Sissix is an Aandrisk, and looks like most of her species. ![]()
